ECSA-HC works with a wide variety of partners in implementing programme activities. The role of partners is essential in extending the reach of ECSA’s work across the region. ECSA’s partners cover broad range of thematic areas in the health sector offering both technical and financial support.

They have remained strong advocates for improvement of health policies, programmes, sharing of best practices and scaling up high-impact interventions. Over the last five years, the ECSA Health Community has collaborated with partners in the areas of Human resources for Health, Maternal Newborn and Child Health, Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis, Nutrition, and health Systems Strengthening.

The European Commission Horizon 2020 supports ECSA-HC through the College of Surgeons for the East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) under a project called Surg-Africa. This project supports the scaling up of accessible surgery to the most underserved areas in Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia. The World Bank Group is one of the Largest Funding sources globally. It provides financing, policy advice and technical assistance to Governments in Developing countries. ECSA received support through the bank in the following areas.

  • The East African Public Health Laboratory Network (EAPHLN) project, which supports laboratory networking and systems capacity strengthening and strengthening of disease surveillance in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. http://www.eaphln.go.ug/ntrl/
  • The Southern Africa TB and Health Systems Support (SATBHSS) Project. This project aims to improve the coverage and quality of TB control and occupational lung diseases services and to strengthen regional capacity for management of TB and occupational lung diseases in the four project countries: Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.
  • The ECSA/World Bank Nutrition project: Where the bank supports ECSA-HC in capacitating frontline workers on Nutrition.

ECSA-HC received a Grant from the Global Fund to support countries improve TB diagnostics in the region. In this project ECSA-HC works in collaboration with the Uganda Supranational Reference Laboratory).
The four (4) year Global Fund project supports National TB Reference Laboratories in 21 countries which include all the Nine (9) ECSA Member States and other non-Member States namely: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
In this project, ECSA-HC coordinates the project activities and manages the grant while Uganda SRL as the Sub-recipient supports in building capacity and systems strengthening in the project countries. The goals/objectives of the project are;

  • Build a regional network of NRLs for inter-state laboratory quality assurance and management in the ECSA countries;
  • Improve Laboratory service provision for quality assured 1st and 2nd line Drug susceptibility testing accessible to people in need; and
  • Enhance impact of rapid molecular TB diagnostic testing in the region and building capacity of NRLs to undertake epidemiological/national level disease monitoring surveys such as Drug Resistance Survey (DRS) and TB disease prevalence

USAID supports ECSA Health Community in Global Health programmes that build sustainable resilient health systems. Within ECSA-HC, the USAID supports in the following areas.

  • Building Human and technical capacities within ECSA-HC secretariat,
  • Supporting ECSA-HC secretariat deliver services in member countries on Knowledge Management, Nutrition, Health systems Strengthening and human capacity development
  • Translation of Research findings into actions. In this TRAction project ECSA-HC works with the University Research Council (URC) to formulate informed policies and guidelines for implementation in the member states.

  EQUINET, the Regional Network on Equity in Health in East and Southern Africa, is a network of professionals, civil society members, policy makers, state officials and others within the region who have come together as an equity catalyst, to promote and realize shared values of equity and social justice in health. EQUINET gathers people to overcome isolation, give voice and promote networking using bottom-up approaches built on shared values.

EQUINET is building a forum for dialogue, learning, sharing of information and experience and critical analysis. We do this to build knowledge and perspectives, shape effective strategies, strengthen our voice nationally, regionally and globally and to build strategic alliances to influence policy, politics and practice towards health equity and social justice.

EQUINET works with ECSA-HC in Global Health Diplomacy and health policies.

USAID’s Health Evaluation and Applied Research Development (HEARD) project implemented by University Research Co., LLCis a global implementation science partnership of 30 plus entities encompassing policymakers, implementers, researchers, advocates and others necessary to address a range of emerging health and development priorities.  The HEARD partnership and its emerging Implementation Science Collaborative mobilize partners to generate, synthesize, and use evidence to improve the implementation of policies and programs in low and middle-income countries.  Focus areas include woman-centered care, mental health and psychosocial support, urban health, violence against children, disability assistive technologies and evaluation development and implementation. Activities currently span 17 countries and five regions.
