ECSA-HC takes a Swing in the 8KM Virtual Run to End TB to Commemorate the World TB Day in Zambia.
Each year, World Tuberculosis (TB) day is commemorated on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which opened the way towards diagnosing and curing the disease. However, over 100 years later, TB is still one of the leading infectious causes of death in the world despite being both preventable and treatable.
ECSA-HC through its SATBHSS project has taken part in the 8KM charity run that was organized by the Ministry of health Zambia aimed to create awareness towards the Commemoration of the World TB Day that is held globally on the 24th of March of every year.. Speaking at the Launch event that was held at the East Park Mall in Lusaka, Zambia the Permanent Secretary for health Dr. George Magwende said the goal is to run a collective 59,000 km from 19th to 26th March as It is estimated that 59,000 Zambians will suffer from TB in 2022. Each km run represents one of these individuals. ECSA-HC has also been recognized for being a strong partner in complimenting efforts of the Ministry of health in Zambia through its various regional programs such as the TB in the Mining Sector in Southern Africa Project (TIMS III) which is at its third phase and Zambia has benefited in all two past phases, Global Fund regional TB Laboratory strengthening Project, and the Strengthening Pandemic Preparedness in the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community project.
