Zambia and Zimbabwe Join Forces to Strengthen Cross-Border Health Security

Overview

In July 2025, Zambia and Zimbabwe convened a high-level Cross-Border Health Security Meeting at Kazungula under the HEPRR Programme, bringing together port-health officials, district representatives, and international partners to reinforce epidemic preparedness and response

Focus Areas

The meeting addressed vulnerabilities to cross-border outbreaks such as cholera, polio, and Mpox — often driven by porous borders and limited resources. Discussions highlighted the need for harmonized screening protocols, data sharing, and coordinated resource mobilization between the two countries.

Outcomes and Commitments

Both countries agreed to:

• Strengthen coordination between national and district cross-border committees.
• Expand the use of digital surveillance and real-time data platforms.
• Conduct regular simulation exercises to test preparedness and response capacity.

Regional Significance

These actions reinforce regional solidarity and ensure that no country faces outbreaks in isolation. The outcomes will inform ECSA-HC’s broader regional preparedness agenda, supporting a safer and more resilient East, Central, and Southern Africa region.
