Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy
The East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day—a day to raise awareness of sickle cell disease (SCD), honor those affected, and promote action for improved care and support systems.
Sickle cell disease remains a major public health concern across the region, affecting thousands of individuals and families. Despite its significant burden, the disease often receives limited attention, leaving many communities without adequate resources, awareness, or policy support.
This year’s theme,
“Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy,”
calls on governments, health institutions, civil society, and individuals to work collaboratively in:
-
Strengthening early diagnosis and treatment services
-
Promoting public awareness and education
-
Empowering people living with sickle cell disease and their families to become advocates for change
-
Advancing policy reforms and investments that support inclusive health systems
At ECSA-HC, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting Member States and regional partners in developing resilient health systems that leave no one behind.
Let’s continue to #TellItLoud: Share. Celebrate. Advocate.
