Transforming Healthcare in Kisii County: The Antimicrobial Stewardship Revolution Begins

In a groundbreaking move to combat the rising threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), Kisii County has officially launched its Antimicrobial Stewardship Interagency Committee (CASIC). This pioneering initiative brings together an impressive array of multisectoral stakeholders, including experts in human health, animal health, agriculture, plant health, and beyond, exemplifying a comprehensive One Health Approach.

The inaugural event, graced by prominent Kisii County government leaders, highlighted the critical need for coordinated efforts in addressing AMR. Representatives included Madam Caren Orori, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health; Hon. Leah Ogega, CECM for Water, Environment, and Natural Resources; and Hon. Elijah Okemwa, CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Irrigation, and Cooperative Development.

CASIC’s formation marks a significant stride towards implementing the National Action Plan for the Prevention and Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance at the subnational level. The committee’s focus will encompass several strategic objectives:

  1. Governance and Coordination: Establishing robust frameworks for oversight and collaboration.
  2. Public Awareness and Education: Raising awareness about AMR and promoting responsible use of antimicrobials.
  3. Surveillance and Monitoring: Enhancing systems for tracking AMR patterns and trends.
  4. Infection Prevention and Control: Implementing measures to reduce the spread of infections.
  5. Appropriate Use of Antimicrobials: Promoting judicious use of antibiotics across all sectors.
  6. Research and Development: Encouraging innovation in AMR solutions.

The launch of CASIC was supported by several key partners, including the National Antimicrobial Stewardship Interagency Committee (NASIC), the AMR Secretariat, and the East, Central, and Southern Africa Health Community, through funding from the Fleming Fund under the Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) project.

The Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital AMS Committee played a pivotal role in spearheading the establishment of CASIC, showcasing a commitment to sustainable implementation of antimicrobial stewardship actions.

The inauguration ceremony was capped off with a symbolic signing of the Antibiotic Guardian Pledge Card, underscoring the collective commitment of stakeholders to advance the fight against AMR.

Kisii County’s bold step in inaugurating the Antimicrobial Stewardship Interagency Committee signifies a promising new era in health management, with the potential to set a precedent for other regions grappling with AMR. As Kisii embarks on this transformative journey, the region stands poised to make significant contributions to the global battle against antimicrobial resistance.

Congratulations to Kisii County for this visionary initiative, and may it inspire others to join the cause in safeguarding the health of our communities and future generations.
