ECSA-HC Launches Digital Point of Entry Screening Tool to Boost Regional Health Security
Overview
The East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC) has rolled out a Digital Point of Entry (PoE) Screening Tool — a real-time solution transforming traveler screening and health data reporting across the region
Developed under the World Bank–funded HEPRR Programme, the tool enhances surveillance and reporting at borders, enabling frontline teams to capture traveler data, detect potential health threats such as Mpox, and transmit alerts directly to national systems.
Pilots and Demonstrations
The digital tool is already operational at key border points in Rwanda, and was recently introduced to Zambia and Zimbabwe during the cross-border surveillance meeting at the Kazungula One Stop Border Post, as well as to Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania at their tripartite meeting.
Live demonstrations in Karonga showcased its ability to improve data quality, speed of detection, and cross-border information sharing.
Expected Impact
By digitizing border-health operations, the system will harmonize surveillance, strengthen outbreak detection, and ensure timely reporting across Member States.
ECSA-HC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Member States with digital innovations that make borders smarter, safer, and more resilient.
